In an interview for HealthShots, she added that estrogen levels peak before the menstrual cycle begins and plummet when periods start. Even progesterone follows a similar pattern.

“Estrogen in particular is responsible for the overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans, which is known to cause yeast infections.” There could be a chance that you get a yeast infection around the same time every month. This condition is called cyclic vulvovaginitis.

How to treat infection during menstrual cycles:

1. Eat probiotics: If you’re prone to yeast infections, you can try increasing your intake of probiotic foods, like yogurt, to support multiple good bacteria.

2. Change your underwear every day: Always wear clean underwear and don’t wear wet or sweaty clothes for a long time.

3. Change sanitary pads from time to time: The use of sanitary pads, menstrual cups and tampons can lead to infections. Change pads and tampons at least after 5-6 hours and make sure you clean your menstrual cup properly.

4. Prevent pad rash: Sometimes, menstrual cycles cause rashes. Avoid it by using creams recommended by your GP and changing sanitary pads from time to time to reduce the risk of infection.

5. Stay hydrated: It is the most important thing to keep in mind. With this you will help your body to eliminate toxins, bacteria and also maintain the pH balance.

6. Do not use perfumed products: avoid using scented soaps in your vagina because they can irritate the skin and avoid using vaginal douches.

7. Shower daily: Do not forget to shower especially before and during the menstrual cycle. It will help keep you fresh, clean and reduce the risk of infection.

8. Keep the vagina dry and clean: Simply wash it with lukewarm water, but don’t wash inside.

9. Keep the vagina hydrated: Although this step seems to contradict the previous one, there are ways to keep it hydrated through the application of oils, consult your doctor about it.

10. Avoid Spicy Sugary Foods: Try to reduce your intake of sugar and spicy foods, as sugar facilitates yeast’s ability to thrive in your body.
