We were waiting for the Alfa Romeo Tonale like rain in May and despite the fact that Alfa Romeo had announced a “rebirth” plan, we had not seen models beyond the Giulia and of Stelvio.
Today, as scheduled, the manufacturer has shown us the final appearance and details of the model. The Alfa Romeo Tonale offers a distinctive, sensual and avant-garde design, extolling new stylistic canons.
The front features the inimitable “Tri-lobed” and the Alfa Romeo “Scudetto” badge, which acts as a central focus. Adaptive Full-LED matrix ‘3+3’ headlights evoke the proud look of the SZ Zagato or the concept car Proteus. Developed jointly with Marelli, the three modules form a unique front line for the vehicle, while offering daytime running lights, dynamic turn signals and a “Hello and Goodbye” function.
The taillights adopt the same design cues as the headlamps and form a curve that completely wraps around the rear of the car, creating a truly unique and distinctive light signature.
The model will feature alloy wheels, available in 17″, 18″, 19″ and 20″.
According to the brand, the Tonale stands as a benchmark in the segment in terms of driving dynamics. It guarantees impeccable dynamic behavior like that of a sports car, demonstrated by the best weight distribution and the most direct steering in its segment (13.6), and the fact that it is the only model in its class to be equipped with the System integrated braking system (Integrated Brake System) and includes fixed shift paddles made of aluminum. The adoption of Brembo fixed calipers, with 4 pistons and self-ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear, contributes to improved braking performance.
The Tonale opts for the fully independent MacPherson strut suspension system, with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD). And to further enhance its exceptional road-holding qualities, even on low-grip surfaces, the new Tonale offers two driving solutions: Q4 all-wheel drive in the e-Q4 Plug-in Hybrid version, and front-wheel drive in the Hybrid versions ( MHEV) and diesel. The latter are also equipped with an electronic limited-slip differential.
The technical contents are completed with the active suspension “Dual Stage Valve” with electronically controlled damping.
The interior of the Tonale reminds us of other models of the brand, but much more technological.
The model has an Amazon Alexa voice assistant, complete integration with Amazon so that the Tonale can be chosen as the place of delivery of the packages, opening the doors and letting the courier leave them inside the car, receiving constant updates on the status of the vehicle and much more.
As standard, the Tonale includes a completely new infotainment system. With a customizable Android operating system and 4G connectivity with Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, it also offers content, functionality and services that are always up-to-date.
This system includes a 12.3″ fully digital screen, a 10.25″ main touch screen and a smooth and sophisticated multitasking interface, which keeps everything in view without distracting attention from the road.
Technology is also at the service of safety and comfort with the level 2 autonomous drivingwith new driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering and Traffic Jam Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking ( Autonomous Emergency Braking), Drowsy Driver Detection, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Path Detection and much more.
Alfa Romeo Tonale Engines
The model is offered in two levels of electrification, Hybrid (MHEV) and Plug-in Hybrid.
The new Hybrid VGT (Variable-Geometry Turbo) 160 hp, 4 cylinders and 1.5 liters with variable geometry turbocharger and direct injection of gasoline at 350 bar makes its exclusive debut in the Hybrid version (MHEV). This version is equipped with front-wheel drive and a new hybrid technology. Its variable geometry turbocharger combined with the 7-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission and the 48-volt, 15 kW, 55 Nm “P2” electric motor makes it possible for the 1.5-litre petrol engine to drive the wheels even when the internal combustion engine shuts down.
The access engine to the Alfa Romeo Tonale is the Hybrid version (MHEV) of 130 hp with the new 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 130 hp and 240 Nm of maximum torque combined with the exclusive 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the built-in 48-volt, 15 kW “P2” electric motor and 55Nm.
Maximum performance is guaranteed by the exclusive Q4 Plug-in Hybrid 275 hp, the most powerful version of the range in terms of performance and level of electrification. The advanced hybrid system combines the 1.3-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine of the Global Small Engine family (to provide drive to the front wheels) with the electric motor, to which the rear wheels connect. The system has a 15.5 kWh battery and offers a total power of 275 hp. In this way it becomes the sportiest offer in its class, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. The Plug-in Hybrid version is equipped with Q4 all-wheel drive, i.e. front-wheel drive by the internal combustion engine with rear-wheel drive provided by the electric motor, for an incomparable level of safety and driving pleasure.
At Alfa Romeo they are aware of the reputation of their often questioned reliability and that is why extends protection of major vehicle components to 5 years. The battery warranty on the hybrid versions of the Tonale is also extended to 8 years or 150,000 km.
