Unlike Qualcomm or Mediatek, Apple only supplies chips for its own products. Nevertheless, thanks to the sales of the iPhone, the Cupertino company is positioned today as one of the leaders in this field.
This is well illustrated by the company Counterpoint Research, in a publication on SoC shipments for smartphones in the third quarter of 2021. According to this publication, Apple had a 15% share in this market, and was positioned in third place.
“Apple maintained its third position in the smartphone SoC market in the second quarter of 2021 with a 15% share. With the launch of the iPhone 13 and the holiday season, the share will increase further in the fourth quarter of 2021. However, the negative effect due to the shortage of components will affect their sales during the holiday season ”, comments Counterpoint. Apple’s share in the third quarter of 2020 was 12%, then 22% in the last quarter of 2020.
Remember that today, like most companies, Apple is facing a shortage of electronic components. Because of this, the Cupertino company is having difficulty meeting the huge demand for its series iPhone 13.
But lately there have been signs of a lull. Indeed, the waiting time to buy an iPhone 13 or an iPhone 13 Pro on the company’s site would have been reduced.
Remember that this Counterpoint study only takes into account Apple Silicon chips for smartphones. It therefore does not take into account the chips designed by the Cupertino company for its Macs, such as the M1 chip, the M1 Pro chip or the M1 Max (and future M2 and M2 Pro).
Mediatek still number one in the world
In front of Apple, there is Qualcomm in second place and Mediatek which, since 2020, has been the leader. In the third quarter, the latter had a share of 40%, while the share in the second quarter was e 42%.
According to Counterpoint, Mediatek “Dominated the smartphone SoC market with a 40% share in Q3 2021. Gained shares in the low-mid segment 5G portfolio. LTE SoCs have further helped it to strengthen its position in the market. “
If Mediatek is today the market leader for SoCs, it would be because it is less affected than Qualcomm by the shortage of chips. And while this Taiwanese company has so far focused on components for affordable or mid-range smartphones, in 2022, it is also targeting the premium market.
Soon, smartphones with Mediatek chip that will challenge the iPhone
Recently, Mediatek launched its chip Dimensity 9000. It is an SoC intended for premium smartphones and which will be able to compete with iPhone chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. This new Mediatek chip takes advantage of the 4 nm engraving (allowing a gain in performance and energy efficiency), while the iPhone 13 chip is still content with the 5 nm engraving.
It is not yet clear which smartphones will use the Dimensity 9000 chip. But in any case, these could overshadow the iPhone and high-end models using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
