Moderate consumption of up to three cups a day is associated with a lower risk of stroke and fatal heart disease, according to a study presented at ESC Congress 2021 and by the European Society of Cardiology.
Unfiltered coffee contains substances that increase blood cholesterol
Filtering your coffee may be a better alternative for your heart. The Harvard School of Public Health notes that Unfiltered coffee, like French press and Turkish coffees, contains diterpenes, substances that can raise bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
This information can be especially helpful for people who know they have high cholesterol levels.
Espresso coffee contains moderate amounts of diterpenes. Filter coffee (coffee brewed by dripping) and instant coffee contain almost no diterpenes.
A cup of unfiltered coffee contains about 30 times the concentration of lipid-raising substances compared to filter coffee.
“Unfiltered coffee contains substances that increase blood cholesterol. Using a filter removes them and makes heart attacks and premature death less likely,” shares the ESC.
One thing worth noting is that unfiltered coffee does not increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality, except in men 60 years or oldersaid researcher Dag S. Thelle through the European Society of Cardiology.
According to Professor Thelle’s study, where participants were followed for 20 years, compared to not drinking coffee, filtered infusion was linked to a 15% lower risk of death for whatever reason.
For death from cardiovascular disease, filtered brew was associated with a 12% lower risk of death in men and a 20% lower risk of death in women compared with not drinking coffee. The lowest mortality was among consumers of 1 to 4 cups of filtered coffee per day.
