The new address created by the FBI will be known as the Virtual Asset Exploitation Unit, which will perform various tasks to support the agency in investigations of crimes involving the use of digital currencies.

The US Federal Bureau of InvestigationU, better known by its acronym in English as the FBI, announced the creation of a new unit especially dedicated to dealing with crimes related to cryptocurrencies.

New unit of FBI to combat crimes with cryptocurrencies

This was revealed by FBI in a statement published on the website of the Department of Justice (DoJ), where the announcement was made within the framework of the election of a new president for the National Cryptocurrency Compliance Team (NCET), which is attached to the aforementioned entity. The organization will be led by Eun Young Choi, who previously served as Senior Counselor to the Deputy Attorney General.

The new address created by the FBI will be known as the Virtual Asset Exploitation Unitand according to the statement it is “a specialized team of experts in the field of cryptocurrencies, who will be dedicated to providing support, analysis and training for the entire FBI, also having the task of innovating the agency’s tools in the field of digital currencies to anticipate future threats.”

Working hand in hand with NCET

As to NCET, The body was created in October last year and since then it has been working with various organizations, including the FBI and agencies such as Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and others more.

When announcing the creation of NCET, Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco commented:

“We have already made great strides in combating the misuse of cryptocurrency platforms and we have proven it: we will not hesitate to go after those platforms that help criminals legitimize or hide their criminal proceeds. It’s a pretty aggressive landscape crammed with threats.”
