Surprising research suggests that having a glass of wine a day can lead to a lower chance of developing mental illnesses, such as dementia.
If you enjoy a glass of wine after work or with dinner, we have good news! A new study showed that having a drink a day of this delicious drink can reduce the risk of suffering dementia.
There has always been a common belief that moderate consumption of red wine can protect us from age-related neurodegenerative changes, such as cognitive decline and dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.
Now, an investigation has provided some evidence that this may be true.

In a study involving more than 3,000 adults over the age of 75, researchers found that mild to moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a 42% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and a 29% lower risk of any type of dementia.
The researchers also determined that those who never drink alcohol also have a significantly higher risk of developing any of these diseases compared to those who drink lightly to moderately.
For women over the age of 90, a decrease or cessation in alcohol consumption was associated with an increase in the development of cognitive decline and general dementia.
Experts aren’t entirely sure why this happens, though some say it is because alcohol can reduce inflammation in the brain that has been associated with heart disease, stroke, and other conditions.
Additionally, an organic compound found in red wine can help limit stress and damage to DNA cells in the brain, otherwise causing brain aging.
Other researchers have focused on the lymphatic system, which involves the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.
They discovered that CSF not only cushions the brain, but also removes toxic wastes. This includes the β and tau amyloid proteins that are frequently found at abnormally high levels in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.
Apparently, low doses of alcohol can increase CSF flow by up to 40% and improve the natural detoxification performance of these proteins.
What if you don’t like wine?
These studies also found that iso-α acids (IAA), which are bitter hop-derived compounds found in beer, can prevent the development of age-related brain disorders.
Also, these acids can decrease memory disturbances related to old age and inflammation in the hippocampus, an area of the brain where Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia begin.
