Is Apple already working on its folding smartphones?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

Is Apple already planning its future products with foldable screens? According to an article recently published by the site The Elec, this is the case.

According to the sources of this Korean media, Apple has indeed started working on a new type of OLED panel: panels without polarizer. As The Elec explains, this component improves the “visibility” of the screen.

Apple would therefore be working on an alternative technology that would be better suited to foldable screens. The Cupertino company could in any case develop a system similar to the one Samsung uses on the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

For the moment, this information is still to be considered with caution, since it comes from an unofficial source. However, this rumor signals that Apple may finally be interested in foldable displays.

Indeed, officially, the firm does not yet seem very enthusiastic about this technology. But during this time, Samsung is, on the contrary, fully on it.

The Korean giant, and Apple’s number one competitor in smartphones, started selling folding smartphones in 2019. And today, its models are finally of interest to the general public.

At the end of 2021, Samsung announced that thanks to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3this one will have seen its folding smartphone shipments quadruple compared to 2020. And Samsung believes that the size of this market will increase tenfold by 2023.

No folding iPhone before 2025?

Unfortunately, Apple’s first foldable screen device wouldn’t hit the market for a very long time. In any case, this is what was recently suggested by the analyst Ming Chi Kuo, who is generally very well informed.

While he predicted a release of the folding iPhone in 2024, he revised his predictions in April.

“I expected Apple to launch a foldable iPhone as soon as 2024 in my reports last year, but it’s now clear that this prediction needs to be revised. I predict that Apple could launch its first foldable product in 2025 at the earliest, which could be a foldable iPad or a hybrid of iPad and iPhone”he wrote in a publication.

Ross Young, another analyst agrees. “We have delayed our expectations for Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market by two years to 2025 after discussions with our supply chain contacts. The company does not seem to be in a rush to enter the foldable smartphone market, and it may even take longer than that”he explained in February.
