The case of the first pet infected with monkeypox, since this endemic disease began to spread, raised alarm in France, where it was reported that uAn Italian greyhound owned by a gay couple was infected.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), to date 14,000 cases have been registered in 61 countries on six continents, with an 82% increase in infections since June 27. In the United States alone, monkeypox has spread to 34 states.the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

According to information published in The Lancet Medical Journal, a French couple, involved in a non-monogamous relationship, contracted monkeypox after sexual contact with other men.

Both men aged 44 and 27 attended the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, suffered from extensive ulcers and rashes since their cases were confirmed in June and then 12 days after his symptoms began, the dog began to show signs that he had contracted the virus.

The men reported that they slept together with their dog. They had been careful to prevent their dog come into contact with other pets or humans from the onset of their own symptoms (i.e., 13 days before the dog started showing skin manifestations).

How monkeypox spreads

Monkeypox is now known to have the ability to infect a wide range of mammals, including squirrels, rats, dormice and monkeys in Africa, however, it is the first time that the case of an animal outside these borders is known in this outbreak.

In fact, the first recorded outbreak of monkeypox in the US in 2003 caused 47 human cases in six states and was caused by pet prairie dogs.

The World Health Organization has called the recent outbreak of monkeypox a global emergency. Nearly 100 countries have reported cases of monkeypox this year, and a dozen deaths have been linked to the virus.

Monkeypox can be spread through close personal contact, including direct contact with the monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids of someone with the virus, or contact with cloth or objects worn by someone with the virus.

For its part, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) explains that monkeypox traditionally It is mainly transmitted by direct or indirect contact with blood, body fluids, skin lesions or mucous membranes of infected animals.

They ensure on their website that transmission occurs mainly by respiratory droplets. The infection is also transmitted by inoculation or across the placenta (congenital monkeypox).

“It is also possible for people to get monkeypox from infected animals, either by being scratched or bitten by the animal or by preparing or eating meat or using products from an infected animal,” the CDC said on its website.
