Update: The public beta is available.

Shortly after the WWDC presentation aired in early June 2021, Apple released the first beta versions of its new OS, iOS 15, iPadOS 15, tvOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey to developers. . At the beginning of July, a first beta version was released for the Mac OS. A beta 3 then a beta 4 of the software followed last month, as well as a beta 5 and a beta 6 in August. In September, we were treated to a beta 7 and a beta 8. It is the turn of beta 9 to arrive at the beginning of October.

Users registered in the Apple beta test program can therefore update their Mac now to macOS Monterey beta 9. See the list of Macs supporting macOS Monterey here.

The macOS 12 system, or Monterey, is full of new features. We will detail these in the coming days. In the meantime, feel free to check out our full recap of the WWDC 2021 conference and follow the macOS Monterey revelations here.

macOS 12b4:

  • Live Text: Preview software now detects text in photos, just like Google Lens. This makes it easier to interact directly with phone numbers or addresses. Letters can even be selected manually, if need be to copy or cut them elsewhere. Until now, only devices with an M1 processor were affected by this option. But with beta 4, this is also the case for Intel.
  • Universal Control: functionality allowing to manage several devices at the same time, for example by controlling an iPad from its Mac installed next to it. Warning: Apple quickly removed the mention of this solution in its beta 4 support documents, a sign that it may be gone for now.
  • Safari: the new compact tab bar design can be activated from browser settings. Home page sync no longer requires a particular version of iOS or macOS

macOS 12b3:

  • Safari: like on iOS 15 beta 3, Safari’s design is adjusted to a tab bar now visually closer to what macOS Big Sur offers, a single search bar at the top of the screen and the tabs below. in the first beta of macOS Big Sur, there was no single search bar, each tab served as a search point and the starting point for new navigation. However, an option allows you to choose between the two views according to your preferences in Safari.
  • Universal Control: still not functional under macOS 12 beta 3, Apple has set up a first settings window in the macOS system options

macOS 12b2:

  • Plans: new icon
  • Memojis: new clothing customization options
  • Wallpapers : “Hello” wallpapers that were previously exclusive to iMac M1 are now included in macOS Monterey
