In recent weeks, the media have regularly referred to the zero COVID policy still applied by China. As life returns to normal in almost every country on the planet, China is still resorting to lockdowns. And the strict containment that has been decreed in Shanghai threatens the threat to the global supply chain.
Apple, whose product assembly depends heavily on the Middle Kingdom, is not spared. And this not only affects the production of the devices already on the market, but also the development of the next iPhones.
In any case, this is indicated by an article recently published by the Asian media Nikkei. Citing sources within Apple’s supply chain, our colleagues indicate that the development of at least one of the models of the iPhone 14 series has fallen behind the schedule provided by the Apple brand. .
Thus, to make up for lost time, Apple would have asked its suppliers to speed up the pace, so that this delay does not affect the release of the next iPhone.
According to the explanations of the Asian media, the new iPhones are currently in a phase called EVT or engineering verification test. It is during this stage that the suppliers would design the mechanical parts as well as the manufacturing flow. It is also during the EVT that these suppliers would calculate the manufacturing costs.
And the problem is that one of the new iPhones would have been delayed by three weeks because of the confinement that was imposed in Shanghai.
However, Apple’s schedule would provide for the end of the EVT at the end of June, in order to move on to the next stage: verifications. In this way, mass production can begin in August for marketing in September.
“If the development process can be accelerated to the next level around the end of June or the beginning of July, it should still be possible to meet the mass production deadline of early September”, said one of the Nikkei sources. He added that everything will depend on the ability to speed up the process.
However, according to Eddie Han, an analyst at Isaiah Research, the restrictions have not yet been completely lifted in Shanghai. “The resumption of production is progressing badly because there are still many restrictions in terms of life and movement in the greater Shanghai area, even if these production sites can operate in a closed loop”he says.
The analyst nevertheless believes that for the moment, a postponement of the launch of the iPhone 14 is not on the table. “Currently, we don’t believe the delay would immediately affect the product launch schedule, but we need to monitor closely if there are any hidden and longer-term impacts.”he added.
iPhone 14: highly anticipated “Pro” models
As a reminder, Apple should release 4 models in the fall of 2022. According to rumors, the firm would abandon the mini format, and release an iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Max, an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Apple would offer a lot of interesting new features for the Pro models. Indeed, on the design side, these would no longer have a notch on the facade. The front sensors would be placed on a bubble and a pill pierced in the screen.
On the back, there would be a 48-megapixel main sensor, instead of the 12-megapixel sensors that Apple has accustomed us to. In addition, the firm would also increase the RAM memory.
And on the 4 models, Apple could offer an important evolution for the front camera. Indeed, according to some sources, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would have cameras with autofocus for selfies. This would improve the quality of portrait mode, but could also increase costs.
