Today we have heard the incredible exhaust note of the model when it has been equipped with an exhaust system that has had the GPF or Particulate Filter removed from its Gasoline engine.
BRS Motorsport has customized the exhaust and replaced the particulate filter with a freer-flowing 200-cell catalytic converter and a 70mm pipe configuration.
We could say that the result is obvious, but it is still better than “jump to the ear.”
Without a doubt, the Italian company has notably tuned the sound of the GR Yaris, no?.
What is the Toyota GR Yaris like?
At the top of the range for the new Yaris we find the GR Yaris, a unique model that benefits from the technical and design skills of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Y Tommi Mäkinen Racing, Toyota’s partner in the WRC.
Although the new GR Yaris sits at the top of the new Yaris range, it features a unique design, with a three-door body and a 91mm lower roof, which forms a coupe silhouette, intensified by the doors. Frameless. At the front, the grille design and bottom trim express the authentic GR status of the new GR Yaris, while the spacious rear and powerful fins accommodate 18-inch alloy wheels.
The engine of the GR Yaris is a new unit of three-cylinder turbocharged with news such as piston cooling with multi-oil injection, large diameter exhaust valves and a machined intake port. With a displacement of 1,618 cm3, it develops a maximum of 192 kW / 261 hp and 360 Nm of torque.
The compact and lightweight 12-valve DOHC engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, designed to accommodate its high levels of torque.
The bodywork is predominantly constructed from lightweight materials, such as a new carbon fiber polymer for the roof, which can be compression molded. For its part, aluminum is used on the hood, doors and tailgate.
As a consequence, the GR Yaris has the power of a C-segment performance sports car, but the weight of a B-segment model –1,280 kg tare-. Its power-to-weight ratio of just 4.9 kg / hp helps it reach an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 5.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 230 km / h.
The performance of the GR Yaris is based on a new GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system, designed to optimize the power delivered to each wheel, as well as being simple and lightweight.
The torque distribution between the front and rear axles is regulated by a highly responsive coupling. As an option in the Circuit Pack, two type limited slip differentials Torsen manage the distribution between the left and right wheels, for natural and direct control of the vehicle.
This system employs slightly different gear ratios for the front and rear axles, and allows a theoretical range of torque distribution between front and rear of 100: 0 – full front wheel drive – to 0: 100 – full wheel drive rear.
The driver can adjust the operation of the four-wheel drive according to his preferences or the driving circumstances, by means of a 4 × 4 mode selector knob. In normal mode, the basic torque distribution between front and rear is 60:40, while in Sport mode the balance shifts to the rear, with a 30:70 distribution allowing more intense driving on winding roads and circuits. .
The third mode, called Track, with a basic setting of 50:50, is focused on competition in circuits or special situations. In each mode, the torque distribution will automatically adjust in response to driver actions, vehicle behavior, and road or track conditions.
The GR Yaris has a new specific platform It combines the front end of Toyota’s GA-B platform – debuted in the new Yaris – with the rear of the GA-C platform. This allows for a new suspension design and installation of the GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system. It also contributes to the excellent levels of stability and handling feel guaranteed by the new GR Yaris.
Where the new Yaris mounts a torsion bar rear suspension, the GR Yaris offers a double wishbone setup, with all elements optimized for increased performance. A MacPherson suspension system is used at the front.
The high-performance brake system incorporates large 356mm ventilated front discs with four-piston calipers, designed to cope with the demands of racetracks and special-circumstance riding with a high level of thermal capacity.
Customers will be able to take their GR Yaris to an even higher level thanks to Circuit Pack (optional), with a Torsen-type limited-slip differential on both the front and rear axles, a high-performance tuned suspension and 18-inch forged alloy wheels, with 225/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires.
