Has it happened to you or do you know of someone who has a discharge of milk through the nipples without being pregnant or nursing? Or Problems with menstruation and getting pregnant?
Hyperprolactinemia, what is it?
It could be an elevation in the blood of a hormone called Prolactin, a condition called Hyperprolactinemia.
This hormone is secreted by the pituitary gland, which is located in the central area of the head, closely in contact with the area of vision.
Its primary function is to stimulate and prepare the breasts for the secretion of milk during breastfeeding.
We must distinguish between the normal elevation of Prolactin, which occurs with pregnancy, breastfeeding, intercourse, physical exercise, and even stress, however during these events it should not cause any pathological alteration in our body.
Prolactin Hormone can be elevated for abnormal causes:
– Pituitary tumor.
-Side effects of medications: antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and antihistamines.
Regardless of the cause, this abnormal elevation of Prolactin can cause milk secretion, a decrease in the size of the genital organs, infertility, problems with menstruation, visual symptoms, but it can also occur without any symptoms since blood levels can vary.
Prolactin may be elevated in hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome
Elevation of this hormone has also been shown in conditions such as hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome.
That is why for its differential diagnosis some laboratory studies are requested, in addition to Prolactin, including thyroid hormones and the female hormonal profile.
Once hyperprolactinemia is confirmed, symptoms such as those described above will be sought to complete the medical history.
In addition, it is necessary to have a multidisciplinary team that includes a neurologist and an endocrinologist, who could request complementary imaging studies to rule out a malignant cause.
Hyperprolactinemia is a sign that we can notice through blood studies, however, it is important to find the cause that originates it through more extension studies, to implement the appropriate and individualized treatment of each patient.
