Google has just launched a new tag taken into account only by its robot (googlebot). Called indexifembedded, what is it actually used for? In which cases to use it? Here are some answers.
What are robot meta tags?
Are you interested in natural referencing but you are not an expert in technical referencing?
The robots meta tags, which is placed in HTML in theof websites to, among other things, manage the crawl and the indexing of web pages.
These same tags can also be specified through HTTP headers if you do not have access to HTML (eg: PDF file, image, video, podcast, etc.).
indexifembedded: a new tag dedicated to Google robots
Only taken into account by Google robots, this new indexifembedded tag concretely allows you to indicate to GoogleBot that you want a content (image, PDF file, media, video, audio content) to be indexed preferably on the page on which it is integrated (embedded, embedded, integrated) that either via an iframe or another method (ex: the “object” tag).
This new tag must be used in association with the tag noindex used to block the indexing of pages or de-index the web pages of its choice.
In which concrete cases to use the tag indexifembedded ?
Here is a concrete example of use:
- You have a PDF file and you want to integrate it on one of your web pages: you specify in the X-Robot-Tag of the URL where your PDF file is available the tag indexifembedded in parallel with the use of the tag noindex : thus, it is the page that includes the PDF that will be preferred by Google if a search associated with this PDF is made. This will prevent a user from landing on a PDF file hosted on a server, he will instead be redirected to a web page that offers a more interesting user experience.
How to use index if embedded tag?
To integrate it in the metas, in the head HTML, here is what to put:
<meta name="googlebot" value="noindex" /> <meta name="googlebot" value="indexifembedded" /> <!-- OU --> <meta name="googlebot" value="noindex,indexifembedded" />
To integrate it at the X Robot Tag level, here is what to integrate in the HTTP headers:
X-Robots-Tag: googlebot:noindex X-Robots-Tag: googlebot:indexifembedded ... OU … X-Robots-Tag: googlebot:noindex,indexifembedded
