5G has barely started and Apple only launched its first compatible smartphones at the end of last year. However, the Cupertino company has no intention of resting on its laurels. It has just published a series of job offers to recruit engineers who will work on the next generation of mobile telephony.
On the announcements, it is clearly stated that newcomers will design a 6G wireless network. For this, future employees should work in close collaboration with other experts in the sector. The apple brand specifies:
You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to create next-generation wireless technology that will have a profound impact on future Apple products. In this role, you will be at the center of a cutting edge research group tasked with creating next generation radio access technologies over the next decade.
Apple’s competitors are also very mobilized
The company therefore intends to be up to the task on 6G. The idea would be to work on your own modem and avoid relying too much on competitive hardware, as is currently the case with Qualcomm for 5G.
Note that Apple has been interested in this subject for a long time now. Thus, last November, we learned that the company had joined the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) to work on this new generation. It works with US tech giants including Google, HP, and Cisco. These companies discuss concrete topics such as manufacturing, standards and preparation for future 6G marketing.
Apple’s rivals are also very active, like Samsung, which published a white paper to present the challenges of this new technology. The South Korean company mentions a possible speed of 1000 Gb / s, or 50 times the 5G, as well as the arrival of streaming in virtual reality at 16K.
